David Baglietto Vargas

Ph.D. Principal Investigator

David Baglietto Vargas, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Senior Researcher Beatriz Galindo at University of Malaga (UMA).

Dr. Baglietto-Vargas received his BS in Biological Sciences in 2002 and a doctoral degree (Cum Laude) in 2008, both from the University of Malaga, Spain. During his doctoral thesis, he investigated the mechanisms underlying the loss of the GABAergic neurons in an APP/PS1 model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). He continued his Postdoctoral research with Dr. Frank M LaFerla at University of California, Irvine in 2009 and he studied the impact of psychological stress on AD, and investigated the effects of anti-glucocorticoid drugs as potential AD treatments. His lab is currently investigating how multiple risk factors, namely, genetic, environmental and comorbidities, are involved in the onset and progression of AD. He has published over 46 original peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters, and his studies has been supported by several prestigious foundations (Alzheimer Association and Larry L. Hillblom) and national programs (Spanish Minister of Science).

Dr. Baglietto-Vargas has received multiple honors awards (e.g. Young Scientist Award Scholarship from the Alzheimer’s Association or The Carl W. Cotman Schola’s Award from the Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders). He is providing review service over more than 25 different journals (e.g Molecular Psychiatry Nature, Acta Neuropathologica, Brain Pathology, Neurobiology of Disease, Cell report, etc) and grant review service in several respected foundations and national agencies (including Alzheimer’s Association, Institute for Memory Impairment and neurological Disorder,  The Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium, and Spanish Research State Agency). He is currently an associate editor for Frontiers in Aging in Neuroscience, Neuroscience Letters and Cells.

Juana Andreo López

Ph.D candidate

Juana has a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry by the University of Málaga (2019) and a master’s degree in Molecular Biomedicine by the Autonomous University of Madrid (2020). In 2021, she went back to Málaga where she is currently conducting her doctoral thesis at Baglietto Lab. Her studies are centered in the amyloid pathology and unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying it. To this aim, she includes in her experiments a new murine model of Late onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), an innovative and promising tool in Alzheimer’s research. Her ongoing educational training, at the national and international level, has given her extensive experience in numerous laboratory techniques. Overall, her collaboration in Baglietto Lab seeks to shed some light on finding a potential therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Miriam Bettinetti Luque

Ph.D candidate

Miriam Bettinetti Luque has a bachelor’s degree in Biology (2020) and master’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology (2021) from the University of Malaga.  She is a PhD student at the Department of Cell Biology and her work focuses on the study of molecular changes in white adipose tissue and their implication in Alzheimer’s disease.

Investigadora Cynthia Campos Moreno

Cynthia Campos Moreno


Cynthia has a bachelor’s degree in Biology by the University of Malaga (2017). She completed a master’s degree in Basic, Applied and Pain Neurosciences by the University of Granada (2019), and later, a master’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology by the University of Malaga (2021). Cynthia is currently a member of the Cell Biology department and she is working in the therapeutic efficacy of a compound that target microglia-mediated synaptic removal observed in Alzheimer’s disease.

Francisco José Cantero Molina

Master's Student

Francisco José Cantero is currently studying a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Malaga, Spain. From the very beginning he has been curious about neurodegeneration and related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD). He is doing his undergraduate final project about amyloid seeds and propagation and therapeutic implications for Alzheimer’s disease.
